My Bachelor of Arts degree allowed me to experiment in many mediums though I ultimately focused on dark room photography, graphic design, and oil painting. I have always been a maker and creator, but it was not until recent years that I began to feel the need to return to art for art’s sake and shape this integral aspect of my nature into a body of work. Having no access to many of the supplies of my undergraduate art studio, I largely work with that which is most affordable, malleable, storied, and comfortingly familiar to me from childhood—textiles.
I still rely on many of the fundamental elements of former mediums—the color theory that is essential to oil painting, the composition of photography, and the bold graphic nature andsanctity of negative space that upholds the graphic arts. With these tools, I explore the juxtaposition of identity, gender, history, and material culture against the backdrop of our sociopolitical landscape.
